When I captured this image I knew it would be a keeper. Graphically it’s balanced well, the lighting is subtle and purposeful, and the textures create a tension that brings focus to the image. As a formal study or an object, I think it’s a success. However, does it communicate anything beyond this?
For a long time I’ve been obsessed with the craft of photography, and I believe I’ve gotten the hang of it. I can walk you through many 19th, 20th, and 21st century processes, and I’m fairly savvy when it comes to using these tools to illustrate simple ideas.
This project is about communication and questioning the purpose of my practice through this ridiculous diaristic format. The intent and subject matter purposefully will not draw in a wide audience; it is too specific and wholeheartedly tied to Gulf Coast Louisiana as a place, a culture, and a home. These images are created as a reminder that through this place we share something and can find commonality here. It is okay to not agree on everything, except whether or not cantaloupe should be served at every meal.
